This morning I went out to sit next to my little waterfall and pond. There on the stone next to the pond was what appeared to be a perfect little robins egg. I picked it up, expecting the other side to be cracked. but is was not. The heft of the tiny egg in my hand lead me to believe that the shell was full of a developing bird. I wanted explore the egg more fully latter. While I was scurrying around to find a safe spot where the dogs wouldn't find it, I dropped it about 6 inches. There was a soft cracking sound. The tiny egg had cracked. Inside there was no noticeable developing chick.
However, I had just proven that the idea could have fallen from the canopy of trees overhead. That kind of dropped would have smashed the egg. So how did this tiny blue egg with spots get to be on a rock next to the pond?
My working theory involves my pond fish (goldfish). Just yesterday I had 7 goldfish. now it looks like there are only 6. I think a raccoon pilfered the egg from a birds nest overhead and brought it down to the water's edge to wash its hands. It put the Robin egg on the rock. Then it saw a fish swimming to close to the edge. The raccoon snatched the fish and forgot all about the little egg.
